Japanese Ukiyo-e Printmaker, ca.1797-1861

Patrick Masterson of Burning Bones Press introduced me to this amazing Japanese printmaker, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳, January 1, 1797 - April 14, 1862.) I am excited to see more of his work. Compared to his contemporaries, Kuniyoshi's style has a strong western influence that looks very 21st century. This style can be clearly seen in many of his monster battle images.

His influence is reflected in the work of many modern Japanese artists, such as Miyazaki and Goseki.
Some of his work can be seen on www.kuniyoshiproject.com and monsters on a flickr site.
